The survey is released as part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/covid19misinfo.org\/\">COVID-19 Misinformation Portal<\/a>\u00a0(covid19misinfo.org), a rapid response project funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the first COVID-19 lockdown order, social media has emerged as an indispensable lifeline for people to connect to friends, families, classmates, and co-workers. This increasing reliance on social media is not without its problems; social media is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/socialmedialab.ca\/web\/2019\/10\/16\/detecting-bots-trolls-toxicity-online\/\">well-established<\/a>&nbsp;as a vector in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/socialmedialab.ca\/web\/2019\/10\/15\/fingerprinting-known-misinformation-campaign\/\">spread of false narratives<\/a>. To examine the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/policyoptions.irpp.org\/magazines\/april-2020\/we-can-inoculate-ourselves-against-covid-19-misinformation\/\">digital hygiene<\/a>\u201d practices of Canadians during this unprecedented health crisis, we asked 1,500 online Canadian adults (18+) about where they get news about COVID-19 from, how often they encounter misinformation on this topic, and what do they do about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201c<em>One of the primary goals of this Canada-wide survey was to understand what strategies social media users employ when seeing COVID-19 content that they think is false or misleading<\/em>,\u201d say Anatoliy Gruzd and Philip Mai, co-authors of the report and co-directors of the Toronto Metropolitan University Social Media Lab.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"410\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/socialmedialab.ca\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/INFOGRAPHIC-UPDATED-04_30-410x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16703\" srcset=\"https:\/\/socialmedialab.ca\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/INFOGRAPHIC-UPDATED-04_30-410x1024.png 410w, https:\/\/socialmedialab.ca\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/INFOGRAPHIC-UPDATED-04_30-120x300.png 120w, https:\/\/socialmedialab.ca\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/INFOGRAPHIC-UPDATED-04_30-768x1920.png 768w, https:\/\/socialmedialab.ca\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/INFOGRAPHIC-UPDATED-04_30-696x1740.png 696w, https:\/\/socialmedialab.ca\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/INFOGRAPHIC-UPDATED-04_30-168x420.png 168w, https:\/\/socialmedialab.ca\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/INFOGRAPHIC-UPDATED-04_30.png 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Other Highlights From the Survey<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Most Canadians say they trust the accuracy of COVID-19 news more from official information sources such as the&nbsp;<strong>public service and government ministries &amp; departments&nbsp;<\/strong>than from&nbsp;<strong>political parties&nbsp;<\/strong>or even their&nbsp;<strong>friends and family<\/strong>.<\/li><li>More Canadians prefer to get their COVID-19 news from&nbsp;<strong>television&nbsp;<\/strong>(60%) than from&nbsp;<strong>social media&nbsp;<\/strong>(22%).<\/li><li><strong>Facebook<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Reddit<\/strong>&nbsp;are the two most popular sites for COVID-19 news among their users, but newcomer&nbsp;<strong>TikTok<\/strong>&nbsp;also made a surprise showing as a site Canadians are turning to for news about the pandemic.<\/li><li>COVID-19 misinformation was reported present on all popular social media sites and messaging apps in Canada.<\/li><li>68% of Canadians reported&nbsp;<strong>encountering<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>COVID-19<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>misinformation<\/strong>&nbsp;on at least one of the social media sites\/apps they use.<\/li><li>80% of Facebook users, along with around 70% of Reddit, Twitter, TikTok and YouTube users reported seeing misinformation on these sites \u201csometimes\u201d or more frequently.<\/li><li>Among those who reported encountering COVID-19 misinformation on social media sites\/apps (1,019 out of 1,500), the majority (76%) indicated they would&nbsp;<strong>consult other sources<\/strong>&nbsp;to verify information.<\/li><li>And while most social media companies rely on their users to&nbsp;<strong>flag problems<\/strong>&nbsp;to some extent, surprisingly 56% of respondents in this cohort said they had never reported an account\/post that shared misinformation to the social media site.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About the Survey<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data was collected using Dynata, a market research firm, for panel recruitment. The survey was open from April 9 to April 17, 2020 and was hosted on Qualtrics, an online survey platform. We received a total of 1,500 completed responses, excluding incomplete responses and those completed under 5 minutes. The survey was made available to online Canadian adults in English. The term \u201conline Canadian adults\u201d refers to Internet users aged 18 and older. To increase the representativeness of the data, we used proportional quota sampling to recruit respondents, with quotas based on age, gender, and geographical region to match the distributions in the 2019 Statistics Canada population estimates.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rounding and Margin of Error<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All percentages are rounded to the nearest 1%. A margin of error is not reported since an online survey is not a random probability sample.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About the Social Media Lab<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/socialmedialab.ca\/web\/\" target=\"_blank\">Social Media Lab<\/a> is an interdisciplinary research laboratory at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torontomu.ca\/tedrogersschool\/\">Ted Rogers School of Management<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torontomu.ca\/\">Toronto Metropolitan University<\/a>.
