Social Media Lab Welcomes New Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Priya Kumar (@link_priya)

We are pleased to welcome a new member to the Social Media Lab – Dr. Priya Kumar.

Priya Kumar joins us from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, where she recently completed her PhD on global diaspora politics under the supervision of Dr. Fiona B. Adamson. In her dissertation, Dr. Kumar examined online web-based representations of stateless diaspora communities, with focus on the Middle East and South Asia. A member of the e-Diasporas Atlas project, Dr. Kumar combines network analysis with digital qualitative research methods to study online identity politics, with a focus on exploring the dynamic interplay between digital media communication technologies, network actors and civil society.

Dr. Kumar will be joining the lab as a Postdotoral Fellow, working with Dr. Anatoliy Gruzd, the Social Media Lab’s director of research and other lab members on a SSHRC-funded research initiative call “Learning Analytics For the Social Media Age“. Learning analytics is “the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs.” One of the primary goals of this initiative is to devise new theoretical and technical solutions that can help educators and researchers to study formal and informal learning processes that occur in social media. Another goal of the initiative is to provide educators and learners with tools that will help them to determine whether their particular use of social media is beneficial for teaching and learning.

In addition, Dr. Kumar will be contributing to some of the other research initiatives at the Lab including our Social Media and Politics stream and our annual International Conference on Social Media & Society (#SMSociety).
