We are pleased to welcome a new member to the Social Media Lab – Dr. Marc Esteve Del Valle.
Marc Esteve del Valle joins us from the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute (IN3), a research centre of the Open University of Catalonia (UOC), where he recently completed his PhD on Information and Knowledge Society studying Catalan parties and their representatives’ use of Facebook and Twitter. Dr. Esteve uses statistical and network analysis methods to study social media communication, with a focus on understanding the relationship between digital media and network actors.
Dr. Esteve will be working as part of the SSHRC-funded research initiative in the lab to develop novel learning analytics for the social media age. He will be taking the lead in the data analysis portion of the project. Learning analytics is “the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs.” One of the primary goals of this initiative is to devise new theoretical and technical solutions that will help educators and researchers to study formal and informal learning processes that occur in social media. Another goal of the initiative is to provide educators and learners with tools that will help them to determine whether their particular use of social media is beneficial to their teaching or learning.
In addition, Dr. Esteve will be contributing to some of the other research streams at the Social Media Lab including our Social Media and Politics stream.
