We are pleased to welcome Olga Boichak to the Ryerson Social Media Lab as our newest Visiting Scholar.
Olga Boichak is a Ph.D. Candidate at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs doctoral program in Social Science (Syracuse University). In her research, she fuses ethnographic and computational methods to explore the role of digital media in constructing social reality. Olga is a research assistant for the TRACE Project, a multi-disciplinary team of researchers developing a web-based tool for intelligence analysis. She is also part of the Illuminating team, where she studies automated accounts (bots) and their influence on online political discourse.
During her time in residence at the Social Media Lab, Olga will be working with Dr. Anatoliy Gruzd on a project examining the Ukrainian diaspora on Facebook to understand what motivates people to donate and support causes outside of their country of residence. In addition, she will also be giving a talk on March 7, 2018 at 4pm entitled, “Not All Bots Are Created Equal: Exploring Automated Interventions in Online Political Discourse“. You can register for this talk and attend in person by visiting EventBrite or on the day of the talk go to Periscope to watch it live.
