TRSM’s Anatoliy Gruzd, professor of Business Management and director of research at Ryerson’s Social Media Lab, has been named by the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) as a member of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.
The RSC named 70 new members to the 2017 cohort, who “represent the emerging generation of scholarly, scientific and artistic leadership in Canada.”
Gruzd was named a member for his leading contributions to social media research. Gruzd established the first social media research laboratory in North America. His lab is internationally recognized and attracts a diverse range of outstanding multidisciplinary scholars from around the world each year. He is also the cofounder of the annual International Conference on Social Media and Society. Gruzd’s research contribution is wide and varied, ranging from politics to online learning to examining the tensions between privacy and self-disclosure on social media networks. As Canada Research Chair in Social Media Data Stewardship, he seeks to understand the inner workings of online communities examining how people and organizations are adapting to social media, advancing the public’s understanding of the benefits and pitfalls of using social media data for business and research purposes.
