Dr. Anatoliy Gruzd (@Gruzd) Named Canada Research Chair in Social Media Data Stewardship

Anatoliy Network PicWe are pleased to announce that Dr. Anatoliy Gruzd has received the prestigious honour of being named Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Social Media Data Stewardship. The Associate Professor in the Ted Rogers School of Business Management and Director of the Social Media Lab joins fellow Ryerson researchers Ebrahim Bagheri, professor in Electrical Computer Engineering, and Anton de Ruiter, professor in Aerospace Engineering, who have also been named Canada Research Chairs.

The CRC Program, established by the Government of Canada in 2000, invests $265 million each year to “attract and retain some of the world’s most accomplished and promising minds” as part of a national research strategy. Ryerson’s new CRC researchers will receive $1.5 million over five years through the CRC program. Canada Research Chairs are allocated to universities based on the percentage of available funding from granting agencies secured by the university.

Dr. Gruzd’s research initiatives explore how social media and the growing availability of user-generated big data are changing the ways in which people communicate, collaborate and disseminate information and how these changes impact the social, economic and political norms and structures of modern society.  Dr. Gruzd’s expertise lays in developing and testing new analytics tools for discovering and visualizing social media data and online social networks. The broad aim of his various research initiatives is to provide decision makers with additional knowledge and insights into the behaviors and relationships of online network members, and to understand how these interpersonal connections influence our personal choices and actions.

Dr. Steven Murphy, Dean of the Ted Rogers School of Management, expressed pride in Dr. Gruzd’s work, saying “Anatoliy’s research in the emerging fields of big data and social media helps inform decisions on a political, social and economic level. His dedication to research excellence and his work as Director of the Social Media Lab are shining examples of the cutting-edge applied research taking place in the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University.”

“Being Named a Canada Research Chair shows that our researchers are being recognized as some of the best minds in the world,” said Wendy Cukier, Vice-President, Research and Innovation, Ryerson University. “Our new Canada Research Chairs in Social Media Data Stewardship and Software Semantic Computing will address the disruptive and emerging issues of big data at a critical time in the technology and innovation landscape, while our chair in Spacecraft Dynamics and Control is pushing the limits of imagination and research in tackling issues that our space explorers have yet to encounter. This exceptional work will continue to build on Ryerson’s growing reputation as a leader in research.”

Dr. Gruzd is a former United States Department of State Muskie Fellow. He received his PhD in Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2009, his MS in Library & Information Science from Syracuse University in 2005 and his BS & MS in Computer Science from Dnipropetrovsk National University in Ukraine in 2003.
