Where Learning and Analytics Intersect: Dalhousie Social Media Lab at the #LAK14 Conference

As the snow begins to melt (hopefully), and hints of spring fill the air, conference season is starting to warm up. Last week the Social Media Lab was off to Indianapolis for the Learning Analytics and Knowledge Conference (LAK14).

The international LAK14 conference – which is now in its fourth year – was held in Indianapolis, Indiana and focused on how data can be used to improve learning experiences. The lab’s Director, Anatoliy Gruzd, along with three collaborators from the University of British Columbia, Caroline Haythornthwaite, Rafa Absar, and Drew Paulin, convened a panel on Learning Analytics in the Social Media Age (#pLASMA) (the presentation is embedded below).

Aimed at understanding how social networks influence educational models, the project on Learning Analytics in the Social Media Age is part of a new five year (2013-2018) research initiative funded by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
